There is a quiet expectation that many of us recognise. When it comes to political or social issues, everything is supposed to feel heavy, sound serious and remain free of lightness. We have encountered this expectation ourselves again and again. At the same time, we have realised that something can be lost in the process. Because engagement does not arise only from a sense of duty, but often also from enthusiasm, from connection and from moments that feel alive. Aktivismo grew out of a desire to open that space again.
Where the scepticism towards joy comes from
I have often noticed that joy is quickly misunderstood in a political context. It can seem like a sign of superficiality or a lack of depth. Especially when topics are complex or difficult, it may feel almost inappropriate to allow any sense of lightness. This perspective has its reasons, and we take them seriously. These are real issues, shaped by inequality and responsibility. And yet we have asked ourselves whether seriousness truly means excluding every form of joy, or whether in doing so we close off an important way of connecting.
Joy as an entry point rather than a distraction
For us, joy is not the opposite of seriousness, but a way of entering into it. It can bring people closer to topics that might otherwise feel distant or overwhelming. Through her artistic work, Madeleina continually brings this perspective into what we do. She shows that expression, creativity and a sense of lightness can help people open up and become involved. I have also experienced that conversations often begin where an atmosphere exists that does not intimidate, but invites. Joy can be a doorway through which engagement becomes possible in the first place.
The role of community and connection
When we think about engagement, we do not think only about goals or demands, but about people meeting each other. Community rarely forms through shared problems alone. It grows through shared experiences, through exchange and also through moments in which people laugh together or support one another. Aktivismo is meant to be a space where this can happen. Not because everything is easy, but because we believe that connection sustains people and enables them to act over time.
Between seriousness and vitality
There is a tension here that we do not want to resolve. Political issues require attention, care and responsibility. At the same time, engagement needs a sense of vitality that does not arise from obligation alone. We try to hold these two aspects together without setting them against each other. The Campaign Creator is only a tool that can help to structure thoughts and support action. How that action feels, what atmosphere it carries and how people relate to one another within it remains open and deliberately human.
Why we consciously allow joy
We have chosen not to exclude joy, but to consider it intentionally. Not as a strategy, but as a stance. We are not trying to simplify complex issues or diminish their weight. We are trying to create spaces in which people feel comfortable and in which engagement is experienced not only as a duty, but as part of a meaningful life. When people feel invited, they are more likely to stay, to take part and to take responsibility.
Remaining serious while still allowing space to breathe
Perhaps it is this balance that matters most to us. We want to remain serious in relation to content while creating spaces in which people can breathe. Engagement does not have to feel heavy all the time in order to be effective. Sometimes strength emerges precisely where people feel seen, where they experience joy and where they realise they are not alone. For us, this experience is inseparable from what we understand as living activism.
