There is a quiet but fundamental question that has accompanied us from the very beginning. Who is allowed to take action, and under what conditions. We have often seen that engagement depends on motivation, time and courage, but far less on money. At the same time, we notice how many digital services create a boundary at exactly that point. It is not always visible and not always intentional, but it is there. For us it quickly became clear that this is not a boundary we want to build.

Access should not depend on money

I have met many people in different contexts who wanted to make a difference but hesitated because they lacked resources. Often it is not about large amounts of money but about the feeling that you need to invest before you can even begin. That feeling can be discouraging. We believe that engagement should start where someone has an idea, not where someone is ready to pay. Aktivismo is meant to make that first step possible without creating an unnecessary barrier.

Trust grows through openness

When money becomes part of the picture, the relationship between a platform and its users begins to change. Expectations arise, doubts can grow and decisions are perceived differently. It was important to us that trust is not burdened by conditions that have little to do with the actual purpose. That is why we try to be as transparent as possible. We explain how we work and how we think about the future. Not to define everything in advance, but to remain understandable and open.

Funding without exclusion

Of course, the question arises how a project can sustain itself in the long term if there are no direct costs for using it. We reflect on this as well. For us, however, this does not mean restricting access but looking for other ways. We think about how Aktivismo can support itself without excluding the very people it is meant to serve. This is not a simple path and there is no perfect solution, but it is a path that aligns with our values.

Engagement is not a product

Madeleina once said that engagement is something alive that does not translate easily into a price tag. This thought has stayed with us. When people stand up for others, for causes and for community, something emerges that goes beyond economic logic. This does not mean that everything must be free or that work has no value. It simply means that access to engagement should not depend on whether someone can afford a tool.

Responsibility towards the community

If we build a platform for engagement, we also carry responsibility for the kind of community that grows around it. A paywall can create division, even if it is small. It can determine who is included and who is left out. We want Aktivismo to be a space where as many perspectives as possible can come together. For us, openness is not an extra feature but a prerequisite for something shared to emerge from individual ideas.

Staying open and continuing to reflect

We know that much will change and that questions of funding are never fully settled. What remains for us is the conviction that engagement should be accessible. Not as a promise, but as a principle that we need to revisit again and again. This may also mean questioning decisions or adapting our approach. What matters to us is that we do not lose the original idea. Engagement begins with an idea and should not end at a barrier.
