Data protection often sounds like something that only matters when something goes wrong. Forms, consent boxes, long texts that people confirm without fully reading. Over time our perspective on this has changed. We have come to understand that data protection does not begin at the end but at the very beginning. “Privacy by Design” is not just a technical term for us, but a way of thinking that shapes our daily decisions, both small and large.
Decisions begin earlier than we think
When we work on a new feature, we do not start by asking what is possible, but what is truly necessary. I have often noticed how easy it is to collect more data than needed simply because it is technically straightforward. “Privacy by Design” means consciously questioning that impulse. Which information do we genuinely need for something to work, and which do we not. This question guides us from the very start and changes how we approach development. It is not about reducing things afterwards, but about staying deliberately minimal from the outset.
Trust grows through restraint
We believe that trust does not come from covering every possibility, but from choosing restraint. When people use Aktivismo, they should not feel observed or evaluated. Madeleina often brings in the perspective that a platform only feels right when people can move freely within it. This sense of freedom is closely linked to how data is handled. For us, “Privacy by Design” also means setting limits for ourselves and not analysing everything that could technically be analysed.
Control remains with people
An important part of our work is to create ways for people to understand and manage their own data. It is not enough to collect little. People should also know what happens to their information and have the possibility to adjust or delete it. I see this as a form of respect. Those who engage often bring personal concerns and convictions with them. This openness deserves to be met with an approach that supports self determination rather than restricting it.
Technology as a tool, not an intrusion
For us, “Privacy by Design” also means shaping technology in a way that supports without pushing itself to the foreground. Data processing happens in the background, but it should not be invisible in the sense of being incomprehensible. We try to keep processes as simple as possible so that it remains clear what is happening. This is not about perfection, but about honesty. We do not want to create the impression that everything is fully controllable, but to be open about where limits exist.
Responsibility in the small details
Many decisions in the area of data protection seem minor. They concern form fields, default settings and technical processes that no one directly sees. For us, this is exactly where “Privacy by Design” becomes real in everyday life. It is in these small points that it is decided whether a platform treats people with respect. We feel this responsibility with every change, even if it is barely visible from the outside. Perhaps this is precisely where data protection becomes tangible.
A quiet promise
In the end we understand “Privacy by Design” as a kind of quiet promise. A promise that we handle what is entrusted to us with care. A promise that we do not seek to know more than we need to know. And a promise that we are willing to question our own decisions again and again. This promise cannot be made once and then set aside. It accompanies us continuously, in every step we take with Aktivismo.
