Engagement often sounds like something large, something that requires time, energy and clear priorities. In reality, it usually looks quite different. Between lectures, working days, responsibilities and the ordinary flow of life, there is often very little space left for what we would actually like to change. We know this tension well. Activism does not emerge in a vacuum but precisely in the midst of lives that are already full.
When the day is already full
I have often felt that engagement requires more time than I actually have. After long days it becomes difficult to focus again, to read into topics or to organise something. At the same time the feeling remains that it would matter to take action. Many people know this inner conflict. You want to contribute, yet your resources are limited. Aktivismo also grew out of this tension, from the question of how engagement can remain possible without becoming an additional burden.
Between expectations and reality
We have spent a long time reflecting on how activism is often presented and how it is truly lived. From the outside it can appear clear, structured and purposeful. From within it is often a process of searching, trying and sometimes failing. Through her work Madeleina has learned that creativity needs time and cannot be forced. From my own experience I know how important it is to hold realistic expectations when people engage alongside their everyday lives. Aktivismo tries to take this reality seriously rather than presenting an image that excludes many from the outset.
Small steps instead of large plans
We have learned that engagement does not always have to begin with large campaigns. Often a first clear thought, a short text or a small action is enough. Especially when time is limited, small steps can make a real difference. They create movement and give a sense that something is possible. The Campaign Creator is meant to support exactly this first step by making it easier without creating pressure. It is not about getting everything right immediately but about beginning at all.
Energy is limited and valuable
An aspect that is rarely spoken about is personal energy. Engagement does not only require time but also attention, concentration and sometimes emotional strength. When these resources are exhausted, activism becomes difficult. We therefore try to design Aktivismo in a way that saves energy rather than demanding more of it. It should offer orientation so that less time is lost to uncertainty and more space is left for what truly matters.
Engagement at your own pace
Not everyone can or wants to contribute in the same way. Some people engage every day, others only occasionally. Both are valuable. Aktivismo is not meant to be a standard by which engagement is measured but an offering that adapts to different realities of life. I find it important to give oneself permission to be active at one’s own pace. Engagement does not lose its meaning simply because it is not constant.
Space for what is possible
Perhaps one of the most important insights is that activism is not a separate area alongside life but something that can become part of it. Not as a constant obligation but as a possibility to contribute when it fits. With Aktivismo we hope to create a space that supports exactly this. A space that understands that time and energy are limited and still opens paths to take action. Not perfectly, not always, but whenever it is possible.
