When people speak about engagement, they often think first of ideas, actions and impact. Yet there is something quieter in the background that matters just as much. Trust. For us, trust does not begin with what is visible, but with what happens behind the scenes. Data protection is therefore not an extra, not an afterthought and not a technical detail, but part of how we understand responsibility.
Trust does not arise on its own
I have often seen how quickly trust can be lost and how long it takes to rebuild it. In digital spaces in particular, this trust is fragile because so much remains unseen. We do not see what happens to our data, who can access it or how it is used. That is why it became clear to us early on that we must act with particular care here. When people engage with Aktivismo, share their ideas and perhaps provide personal information, they are giving us more than data. They are placing their trust in us, and we want to treat that trust with respect.
Less data as a guiding principle
During the development of Aktivismo, we repeatedly asked ourselves which information we truly need. Not in terms of what might be possible, but in terms of what is necessary. From this, a clear principle emerged. We want to collect only what is required to provide and operate the platform in a meaningful way. This is not always the easiest path, as it can be tempting to gather more data in case it becomes useful later. Yet we have consciously chosen not to do so, because we believe that restraint in this area is a sign of respect.
Self determination as part of engagement
For us, engagement is not only about standing up for causes, but also about acting with self determination. This self determination does not end with the question of what someone stands for, but also includes how their data is handled. We want people to understand what happens to their information and to be able to make decisions about it. To me, this kind of control is not merely a technical feature, but an expression of dignity. Those who choose to engage should not feel exposed at the same time.
Technology carries responsibility
Data protection is sometimes treated as something that can be added later, once everything else is in place. That does not feel right to us. The way a platform is built directly shapes how data is handled. That is why we try to consider data protection from the very beginning. Not as a limitation, but as a framework that helps us build responsibly. It also means that we do not use every technical possibility simply because it exists. Instead, we ask whether it aligns with what we are trying to create.
Openness instead of invisibility
An important part of our work is making what happens in the background understandable. Data protection is often described in long texts that are difficult to follow. We want to take a different approach and try to explain things as clearly as possible. This also means being honest about limitations. No system is perfect and no solution is complete. Yet we believe that openness is a step in the right direction because it allows people to make informed decisions.
A quiet but essential part of Aktivismo
Data protection rarely takes centre stage in conversations about engagement, and perhaps it never will. Still, for us it is inseparable from it. Without trust, it becomes difficult to participate, to share ideas and to build something together. We therefore do not see data protection as an obstacle, but as a foundation. It may not be the most visible part of Aktivismo, but it is one that supports everything else.
